MAY 2001
Canine Helpers was very honored to be selected from among the many deserving organizations to receive a much needed 2001 Ford passenger van. It was donated to us by the Ford Dealers of Western New York through their "Ford Friendship Express Program". THANK YOU Ford Dealers!
We also received our first New York State grant, thanks to Assemblyman David Seaman. This made it possible to convert the van into a wheelchair van by raising the roof, adding a wheelchair lift and tie downs. Then to finish it off, we received a grant from IBM, enabling us to add cruise control and the special floor.
The completed van is exactly what Canine Helpers needed. It will allow us to train the dogs with the wheelchair lift and haul them to various training sites, as well as transport the clients in training with their dogs, do follow-up work, and go on interviewing trips. We spend at least 25% of the time on the road in the wheelchair van, so it definitely plays a vital role in our Service Dog program and our success.
THANK YOU ALL for making it happen! (Including Austin Park and Doreen Kish for getting the ball rolling.)

~TRIBUTE TO MY MASTER~
Days beginning bright and early,
Sometimes I get a bit squirrelly.
I’ll try hard to do my best,
But you’ll be responsible for the rest.
Help you transfer out of bed,
Do morning routines so we get fed.
Fetching objects off the floor,
Turning lights on, opening doors.
Answering commands a little faster,
Giving much freedom to my master.
Signaling sounds and answering phones,
All of this for just some bones.
Shaking hands and giving kisses,
My affection never misses.
Pulling wheelchairs left and right,
Trying to please with all my might.
A loving scratch behind my ears
Keeps us going for many years.
The day’s soon over, a pleasant end,
Because I spent it with my best friend!!!
Love Your Devoted Canine For Life

A message from the President…
We at Canine Helpers for the Handicapped would like to thank our many loyal supporters who have helped us over the years. Thanks to our Tops and Quality tape savers and to those who send us their Campbell’s labels. Thanks to those who donate items on our wish lists and contribute to our Open Houses in June and December each year. Thanks to our staff and volunteers for the wonderful job they do, and to our officers and Board of Directors. We’ve come a long way since I first became a Board member.
The Lions Clubs of W.N.Y. built our original training building, which now is used as our kennel building. And thanks to the generosity of Moser family, we were able to build our new training facility, which gives us much more room to train our clients and dogs. We’d also like to thank the Ford Dealers of W.N.Y for our new van.
And a very special thanks to all of you who may never hear your name mentioned or see your name in print, but continue to support us in your own special way. We couldn’t do it without you.
Thanks again,
Don Clark, President
Editor’s note: We’d also like to thank Don for serving on the Board with us since 1992, and for serving as President for the past six years. He is always ready and willing to lend a hand whenever and wherever we need him. Thank YOU so very much, Don!

Kevin Casper & "Morgan", Service Dog – German Shepherd, Lewiston, NY:
When I first lost "Cami", my Service Dog, I didn’t think I could go on. She was so much a part of my life, how could I survive without my best friend? I spent the next two weeks in bed, too sad to even get up, and fell ill. I didn’t go to school; I didn’t want to talk to anyone.
But with the help of my family, and a lot of good friends, I began to heal. We had "Cami" cremated, and I made her a little shrine, and now she will always be with me.
I went to Canine Helpers and asked them to help me find a new dog. They were ready and willing to help. They knew how much easier "Cami" had made my life, and were confident they could find me a new companion who would come to mean just as much to me.
That’s where "Morgan" came into my life. I met her at the Canine Center in the beginning of March, and we loved each other. As soon as I healed from my latest femur fracture, we began our training. She is another beautiful German Shepherd, and has a heart as big as all outdoors! I didn’t realize how much I had missed "dog kisses" until she came to visit me.
I am so grateful for the work of Canine Helpers. They take the challenges I face as a person with a disability and make them manageable – with the best friend a guy could ever wish for!
Sam Zimmer & "Tobey", Multi-Service Dog-Golden Retriever, Orchard Park, NY:
"Tobey makes my life so much fun!"
Ruth Fell & "Max", Service Dog – Beagle / Dalmatian Mix, Springwater, NY:
I lived in Dayspring II in Corning NY with "Glisten", my Mini Longhair Dachshund. One nigh he was very uncomfortable so I called my counselor who came and took us to the vet. After talking with the vet, I made my decision to have him put down.
My counselor drove me to the Animal Shelter in Elmira. We told them I wanted a dog I could train as my Service Dog. After seeing all the dogs, we came upon "Max", and I fell in love with him, and he took to me right away.
Shortly after getting "Max", I started working with him in basic obedience. I continued the training after moving back to the mobile home park in Springwater. I gradually introduced the dumbbell to "Max" to prepare him for picking up dropped objects.
Recently, I spent a week at Canine Helpers for the Handicapped in Lockport to train with "Max" for his Service Dog work. We are practicing every day and he is so happy to help me with chores. He picked up a floppy disk on command! He always gets his treat when he does what is right and does it well.
"Max" is part Beagle and part Dalmatian. He learns fast and is very smart. I would like all of you to meet "max" in person.
Steven Truesdale & "Athena", Service Dog – Chocolate Lab, Buffalo, NY:
"Athena" was Steve’s companion who decided she wanted to be a career woman. So off she went to spend 3–1/2 challenging months at Canine Helpers, receiving an education in beginner and advanced service work.
She now finds her exciting career to be very rewarding and fulfilling. Plus, her new talents have proven to be very beneficial to Steve, who has C.P.

Tape Saver Update
Yes, we’re still turning in Tops and Quality register tapes for cash. Tops - $1.00 for 600, Quality - $1.00 for 400 in tape total.
Many of our old faithful collectors have been helping us for several years, and each month brings new names. WONDERFUL!
A special thank you to all who are sending tapes and Campbell labels through Hilde Henricks or directly to Canine Helpers. It sure makes us feel good knowing that you care and take the time to help our on-going fundraiser. Each one of you is very important to our program.
Please spread the word to your friends!
Thanks again,
Marion
P.S. We do have a container outside our door if you would like to drop off tapes while you’re
out enjoying a country ride.
